Calvary Christian finishes third at state basketball tournament

The Calvary Christian varsity boys basketball team competed in the OCSAA State Final Four at Ohio Christian University over the weekend.

The Spartans took on the defending state champions New Hope Christian Statesmen on Friday in a semifinal contest and came away with a heartbreaking 63-60 defeat.

New Hope gained the early advantage with the help of three 3-point baskets as they led after one quarter 19-16.

The Spartans quickly erased that deficit with three 2nd quarter 3-pointers of their own as they went into halftime with a 33-31 lead.

Calvary Christian increased the lead to 41-35 with 4:45 to go in the 3rd period before New Hope began to heat up and outscored the Spartans 12-0 the rest of the way to head into the final period with a 47-41 advantage.

The 4th quarter saw the Spartans fight back two different times, erasing a 7-point lead at the midpoint of the quarter and a 5-point deficit with just over 2 minutes left to play. Trailing 61-60 with 7 seconds remaining, the Spartans fouled a Statesmen player, sending him to the charity stripe for a one and one. The first shot was missed but Calvary Christian could not secure the rebound. New Hope gathered the loose ball, getting fouled again in the process with 1.1 seconds to go in the game. This time both free throws were made and a last second shot attempt by the Spartans was no good as New Hope came away with the narrow victory.

Tyler Reinhard led Calvary Christian with 18 points. Daniel Wilt had 17 points and Andrew Reinhard joined the 1,000 career point club with 16 points. The senior also pulled down 11 rebounds for his 12th double-double on the season.

On Saturday, the Spartans took on the Wildcats of Coshocton Christian in the consolation game. Calvary Christian overcame the disappointment of the previous night's game and came away with a 64-47 win to give them the 3rd place trophy.

Daniel Wilt led all scorers with a career-high 26 points. Andrew Reinhard continued his remarkable season with 22 points. Reinhard set a single season scoring record with 477 points. Josh Kilgore helped with 9 points and 12 rebounds.

Calvary Christian finishes the season with a school record of 28-6.
